Unique Barstow Hamburger Joint - Put Your Coach In The Movies

You've seen one McDonalds, you've seen them all? Evidently there is at least one Mc-Restaurant that breaks the typical mold: Barstow, California off the old Historic Route 66 is unlike any other of the vast sea of franchised Ronald McDonald diners.

Based on a railroad theme (it all goes along with Barstow's history), you can gobble your Big Mac in a rail car, if you like. Perhaps a giveaway that you've entered an unusual McD's is the big red, railroad water tank prominently perched near the ubiquitous Golden Arches.

Some older ones may yearn for the days when you could get a real minty milkshake at McDonalds--they called it a Shamrock Milkshake. The Barstow Station McDonald's is one of those rare stores in the system that sells the Shamrock Shake--but only along about St. Patty's day.

Visit the Barstow Station McDonalds at 1611 Main Street, just off Interstate 15.

(June 11, 2010) - RV Adventure Videos is looking for an RV to star in its latest DVD release “The Great Rocky Mountain RV Adventure — Glacier Park to the Canadian Rockies.” The shoot will run this summer, July 1 through August 5. The filmmakers will travel aboard the RV.
“Each year we make contact with more than 200,000 RVers and other travelers across the country at RV and travel shows,” said Holod. “That number does not include visits to our popular website and video sales. We are also on Facebook and You Tube. The vehicle we travel with is a big part of our seminars and other public appearances. We are regularly asked about our RV by people in the audience.”
The RV will be featured on the DVD cover as well as throughout the video. It will also receive a commercial in every DVD sold, plus a link, photo and logo on the Holod’s website. “We will mention the RV and show a commercial of the product at each show,” said Holod. This is a great way for a manufacturer or rental company to promote their RVs. The PR possibilities are endless.”
RV Adventure Videos include eight DVD titles, spanning RV travel and destinations through the United States. The company’s most recent production “The Great Rocky Mountain Adventure” has been a best seller.

Rolling Country Cottage Promotes Dating Service and Other strange Stuff


If you live in the rurals of the UK, life can be lonely. Leave it to a couple of enterprising ladies to start a match making service for country-living lonely hearts. To promote their new service, they painted up a motorhome and started on a tour through the UK's rurals.

Of course, why, "an admiring hotel doorman"? Was he just stopping off at the hotel for a quick soda, or did the claustrophobia get to him?

'Nuf to ruin your whole day

"Ah spring!" says the RVer. "Time to open the LP tank valve and fire up the hot water heater!" So the first-of-the-year de-winterizing begins on a quiet Saturday afternoon on Washington's San Juan Island. Probably a good thing the motorhome's owner went back inside the house, because he'd soon disturb the quiet afternoon with a BOOM! that brought the local fire brigade.

Yeah, it's too bad he didn't realize somebody had disconnected the gas line from the refrigerator. No injuries, other than maybe a gaping hole in the owner's pride.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Ready to Roll

With its antique steam engines stoked, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad kicks off a season-long celebration of train rides and special events on May 22, 2010, with Opening Day ceremonies at both the Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado depots.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is co-owned by the people of Colorado and New Mexico. Its locomotives, cars, buildings, and even its 64-mile narrow-gauge route were all part of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway, making it the most authentic train in all of North America.

A ride on the train is an adventure in time. It chugs up the 10,015-foot-high Cumbres Pass, winds through tunnels and over trestles, and snakes along the 800-foot-deep Toltec Gorge, past waterfalls, mountain forests, and alpine meadows. This popular historic narrow-gauge train engages passengers, photographers, historians, and train aficionados on one of the most scenic and historic rail experiences anywhere.

Casino Camping In Northern California


A year ago, the Thunder Valley Casino didn't want an RV anywhere in its parking lots. In one instance reported by RVtravel.com, a security guard rudely ordered an RVer to leave, even though he was just there with his friends for a short time to gamble.

But now. . . a different tune. The casino now welcomes RVers and eagerly provides up to three days of free overnight stays in its parking lot as long as an RVer registers upon arrival. A shuttle is provided to and from the casino. Regular rules apply -- no dumping of sewage, outdoor fires, trailers disconnected from tow vehicles, ride behavior, etc.

Thunder Valley casino is in Lincoln, Calif., which is near Roseville in the greater Sacramento area. The address is 1200 Athens Ave., Lincoln, CA 95648. Its toll free phone number is 877-468-8777.
There's a lot of room to breathe in the casinos in Reno. Gamblers are not showing up in anywhere near the numbers of yesteryear -- in the days before Indian casinos began popping up all over northern California, where most of Reno's customers came from.

But head west across the Sierra range and you'll find crowds aplenty at the huge Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln, a short drive from Sacramento, and about a two-hour drive away from Reno with no need to cross Donner Pass to get there.

Thunder Valley, with 2,600 slots and 98 gaming tables, is owned by the 255-member Auburn United Indian Community tribe, of which only five work at the casino. While the casinos in Reno struggle to make ends meet with far fewer visitors, the members of the once poverty-stricken Auburn tribe are getting rich. Estimates are that each member of the community now receives between $300,00 and $500,000 a year as their share of the casino's profits.

Thunder Valley angered the RV community last year when it banned RVs from its parking lots.

The Web In Your Glovebox

I've used a decent variety of mobile broadband adapters over the years, as I've tried to stay connected on the road. Some combinations work better than others. And nearly all fail at times - mostly dependent on where I was at the time. I recently used the Verizon Wireless MiFi, and had a pretty good experience.

The MiFi is a small device - about the size of a smartphone. It's role in the world is to connect to the Verizon Wireless network and allow any device to connect to the Internet through its WiFi connection. So, basically, it's a hotspot that you can carry with you.

This is not a new idea, of course. I've tried and written about these kinds of systems over the last 5 years or so. What sets the MiFi apart is mainly its size, which also makes it convenient. The other thing that sets it apart is that it's linked to a Verizon account, just like a cell phone.

Using the MiFi was dead simple. I turned it on and gave it a minute or so to find a signal. When it's lights turned the proper colors, indicating an active connection, I let my laptop discover local networks. It found the MiFi, and let me connect just as with any other WiFi connection.

The connection quality was decent, but not great. My opinion and experience with Verizon Wireless is that in most locations it's possible to get some kind of connection. In my little town, Verizon piggybacks over a local carrier's towers, and does not offer 3G speeds. That means that the connection works, but is excruciatingly slow. Still, I'll take slow over no. And as we left the area, and traveled the Interstate, the signal got significantly better.

Size is a big deal for this device - actually it's a 'small' deal because I was able to slip the MiFi into a pocket and stil use it. Very convenient.

The MiFI is available from Verizon Wireless, Sprint, AT&T, and probably a few other carriers. The price is right at (usually) about $100, but you'll need to sign up for a 2 year contract at about $70/month to get that pricing. This is what irks me about all the carriers. I'd prefer to buy the device at retail - about $200 - and pay monthly for service as I need it. But even if I do that, all the carriers want exorbitant fees for part time use, or a 2 year contract anyhow. Argghhh. (end of rant)

It supports up to 5 connections, so you can connect all the family laptops (depending on the size of your family). Obviously, all connections share the same bandwidth, so streaming video and music, not to mention downloads will affect everyone using the connection.

I like a lot of things about the MiFi - most significantly its size and simplicity.

Glove up for RV dumping

I used to empty my sewer tanks bare handed. I didn't like wearing the traditional type dish gloves because they are too bulky and I wasn't crazy about latex gloves because they would easily tear. Last year I was strolling down the isles at Harbor Freight (a tool store) when I noticed nitrile disposable gloves. Since I was building kitchen cabinets for my sister-in-law I decided to pick up a box for working with stain and varnish.
These gloves are thin enough that your sense of touch is not hindered and tough enough to stand up to mild chemical exposure. I liked them so much I decided to keep a box near my sewer clean-out compartment. Now I glove up before dumping and peel off the gloves and toss them into the trash when I'm done. They are coated with powder so they are easy to slip on and off. I like the extra large size even though I normally wear size large because putting them on is easier. You can also use these gloves for changing oil, painting, washing, waxing and many other applications. These gloves are available at big box stores and pharmacies.
